What is Choa Chu Kang Columbarium?

💡 Tip

A quick note on scope: niche bookings here are a direct process between the family or the funeral director and NEA. Kenneth does not work at Choa Chu Kang or any government columbarium. WhatsApp Kenneth at +65 8958 9787 for help with funeral planning more broadly.

Choa Chu Kang Columbarium is a government columbarium managed by the National Environment Agency (NEA). It sits inside the Choa Chu Kang Cemetery Complex at 51 Chinese Cemetery Path 4, Singapore 698932.

NEA describes it as housing approximately 147,000 niches across 18 four-storey blocks, landscaped like a park, with amenities for the elderly and disabled. It is open daily from 8.00 am to 5.30 pm. The NEA hotline for this site is 6225 5632.

Niches here store cremated ashes only. For the other government option see Mandai Columbarium. Yishun Columbarium is still open to visitors but no longer takes new niche bookings.

Niche typeCostHolds
Standard nicheS$500About 2 urns
Family nicheS$900About 4 urns

These are the fees NEA publishes, and they are the same as at Mandai. Niches are allocated sequentially. Payment is due when the booking is confirmed, by NETS, Cash Card (over the counter) or credit card.

NEA does not publish a fixed lease term on the booking page, so confirm the current term with NEA before you book. There are no annual maintenance charges for government columbaria.

For how this compares with private options see Columbarium Cost Singapore.

⚠️ Important

The S$500 and S$900 are for the niche only. The marble plaque that closes the niche and the urn are NOT included. Budget for both on top. See below.

How to book a niche at Choa Chu Kang Columbarium

No advance booking is allowed, so in practice you book after the death, and you need the death certificate to apply.

You can apply in two ways: 1. Online, through NEA's ePortal niche application 2. In person at the NEA service counters

Counter booking hours are Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 4.30 pm and Saturday 8.30 am to 12.30 pm, closed for lunch from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm. NEA does not take niche bookings on Sundays.

NEA asks for: • The deceased's details, such as the digital death certificate • The Application for Cremation at an NEA-managed crematorium, or the Cremation Permit from a private crematorium • The applicant's NRIC or passport • A Letter of Authorisation, if the applicant is not the next of kin • A Letter of Undertaking, if applicable. Some documents, including the Letter of Undertaking, can be downloaded during the online application, so you do not need to hunt for the form beforehand

NEA also asks you to read its terms and conditions before booking.

💡 Tip

Your funeral director can book the niche as part of the post-cremation steps. If you are arranging it yourself, do the online application with the death certificate in front of you so the form can be completed in one sitting.

The marble plaque and the urn

After the niche is booked, two things remain: the urn, and the marble plaque that is fixed to the front of the niche. Neither is included in the niche price. Together they start from about S$880. This figure is indicative, from the contractor Kenneth recommends, and is not an NEA fee.

NEA requires next of kin to use NEA-registered contractors for niche plaque works in NEA-managed facilities. Confirm this with any contractor you engage.

If you would like a marble contractor to do up the plaque together with the urn, Kenneth recommends Pierre Tan, who is an NEA-registered vendor. WhatsApp Pierre Tan on +65 9847 6062.

Because the fees and rules are the same, the practical deciding factors are which site is easier for the family to visit regularly, and which suits the funeral arrangements. Both are dignified, both are a fraction of the price of a private columbarium, and neither lets you reserve a niche ahead of time. If advance purchase matters to you, see Public vs Private Columbarium.
