What is inland ash scattering in Singapore?
Inland ash scattering is the process of scattering cremated ashes at a designated land-based garden in Singapore. It is managed by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and is a legal, dignified alternative to storing ashes in a columbarium or releasing them at sea.
For sea scattering see Sea Burial Singapore. For permanent niche storage see Columbarium Singapore.

The two ash scattering gardens in Singapore
Garden of Peace — Choa Chu Kang
Singapore's original inland ash scattering facility, located within the Choa Chu Kang Cemetery complex. Demarcated lanes with shrubbery and vegetation specifically designed for ash scattering. Open to all religions.
Garden of Serenity — Mandai North (opened August 2025)
Singapore's newer facility, located adjacent to Mandai North Crematorium. Features a leaf-inspired design with four scattering lanes, a tranquil pond, surrounding greenery, and natural light.
Only fine ashes are permitted at the Garden of Serenity. If the ashes have not been processed to fine form, on-site processing is available.
Ash scattering cost in Singapore (2025)
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Inland ash scattering session (either garden) | S$320 (inclusive of GST) |
| Ash processing to fine form (if required) | Available on-site — fee on enquiry |
Rules at the ash scattering gardens
Both gardens are managed by NEA with specific rules:
• Only fresh flowers — no artificial flowers • No joss sticks, incense, or burning of offerings • No food or drinks at the scattering site • No music or amplified sound • Ashes must be in fine powder form to scatter (on-site processing available) • Each session is booked for a specific time slot — arrive on time • Treat the space respectfully — other families may be using adjacent lanes
How to book an ash scattering session
You can apply online or in person.
Online: log in to the NEA portal with Singpass and go to e-Services → After Death → IAS Services → Application for IAS.
In person: at the Choa Chu Kang Cemetery booking office, weekdays 8.30am to 4.30pm (closed 1pm to 2pm for lunch), or at Mandai Crematorium. Your funeral director can also book on your behalf.
Bookings are first-come and can't be reserved far ahead; once you pick a slot, payment is due within about 30 minutes or it lapses.
Documents NEA requires: • Death Certificate • Application for Cremation (NEA-managed crematoria) or the Cremation Permit (private crematorium) • Proof of identity of the next-of-kin or executor named in that document • A Letter of Authorisation, if the applicant is not the next-of-kin or executor
The ashes must be in fine powder form before scattering; if not, this is done at the crematorium at least an hour before your slot. See Cremation Singapore for the cremation process before ash scattering.

💡 Tip
Some families scatter a portion of ashes at the garden while keeping a small amount in a columbarium niche or home altar. This is permitted. Kenneth can help coordinate any combination of arrangements. WhatsApp +65 9112 1226.
